21st November 2010:
Stay Alkaline For Cancer Prevention
Balancing a healthy lifestyle with healthy choices is key in all cancer prevention. According to the American Cancer Society, a woman in the United States is diagnosed with breast cancer every three minutes. There are many things you can do to prevent yourself from becoming a statistic.
Lifestyle factors such as regular exercise, increasing vitamin D intake, and eating a low-fat diet can help reduce your risk of getting breast cancer. All the prevention methods listed here can all help you live a well-balanced life-one full of energy and vitality:
Alkalize your blood. A healthy pH balance-the ratio of alkalinity to acidity in the body-is crucial to being cancer-free. Cancer thrives in acidic environments and but is unable to survive in alkaline ones. Edgar Cayce, typically referred to as "father of holistic medicine," consistently emphasized the importance of maintaining a proper acid/alkaline balance in the body. Cayce said that "a normal diet is about twenty percent acid to eighty percent alkaline-producing."
Make sure your diet is rich in alkalizing foods such as green vegetables, beans, spices, herbs, seeds and nuts. Limit your consumption of alcohol, coffee, meat, fish, poultry and eggs. You can measure your pH levels with litmus strips to be sure your body is more alkaline than acidic.

14th November 2010:
Green your beauty routine.
The way we look is a direct result of what we put into our bodies. The food we eat and the beauty products we use greatly affect our outward appearance.
Unfortunately, it is a fact that like our food supply most of our beauty products are full of toxins, preservatives, and even poisons. These are put in our beauty products in order to give them a longer shelf life and thus give the companies more profits. In order to be a healthy consumer, we must make conscious choices at the check-out counter by choosing natural and organic beauty products.
Don't be fooled by advertising. Most of the beauty products you see on TV and in magazines are targeted towards us to make us think we need their product to look younger, sexier, and skinnier. In fact these products actually age us because of all the poisons, toxins and preservatives in the product! When we use these products on our hair, skin or nails we are putting these toxic substances directly into our bloodstream!
The cosmetics industry is the least regulated industry under the jurisdiction of the FDA. This means that we have to be cautious and aware of the products we are using. Even some natural products contain hidden toxins and preservatives so it is important to read labels carefully. Go to your local health foods store and purchase products that are certified organic. Or, save money and make your own products and cosmetics with natural ingredients such as yogurt and honey. Your hair, skin, and body will be on their way to being beautiful and glowing the way nature intended!

7th November 2010:
Know your toxins. Avoid MSG
Monosodium glutamate, also known as MSG, is a common food additive. It`s toxic and physically addictive. Fast food companies and other food manufacturers use MSG as a "flavor enhancer," so
consumers will become "hooked" on their products and keep dishing out money for more. When people consume unhealthy foods containing MSG, they often gain weight and feel sluggish, and some also experience "MSG symptom complex." The symptoms can include headaches, chest pain, heart palpitations, nausea, and other heath problems.
Although MSG is normally associated with Chinese food, processed meats, and salty snacks, it`s also frequently found in bouillon cubes, canned soups and vegetables, barbecue sauce, salad dressing, and virtually every other processed food you eat. "Monosodium glutamate," or "MSG," won`t likely be listed in a products` ingredient list. It`s often disguised as calcium caseinate, gelatin, hydrolyzed vegetable proteins, autolyzed yeast, hydrolyzed yeast, yeast extract, soy extracts, "spices," or "natural
flavorings."

31st October 2010:
Limit Dairy Products.
Contrary to a popular ad campaign, milk does not do your body good. Yes, milk contains calcium, but it comes with a price: When you ingest cow's milk you are also ingesting unhealthy saturated fat, growth hormones, and antibiotics that were given to the cows. Growth hormones contribute to our nations obesity epidemic- especially in children- and the antibiotics in cows milk lower our resistance to antibiotics. You can get all the calcium you need from dark green leafy vegetables such as spinach, brocolli and kale.
Still not convinced? Consider this: Dairy products contain casein, an animal protein that promotes cancer development and growth. Dairy products have been linked to skyrocketing rates of breast cancer and prostate cancer in the United States. Additionally there is an undeniable correlation between Johne's disease in cows and Crohn's disease in humans.
There are some wonderful substitutes for milk that you can drink and use in baking and cooking such as soy milk, almond milk, hemp milk or my personal favorite: rice milk.

Summit organics update
Greetings!
Many thanks once again if you came out to our working bee last Tuesday. Although it was a hot day we really appreciated your help: so MUCH was achieved! The barbeque was a very pleasant way to round out the day together.
Just to reiterate, the flooding rains left our crops in tatters. We have been growing vegies for thirteen or so years and this is definitely one of our most difficult situations. Unfortunately, we had to put off all our staff two weeks ago – at least temporarily. However the work still has to go on to ensure we have produce available once the really wet weather finishes – hopefully in autumn. Autumn is one of our best times to grow food crops, so it is really important for us to prepare well – which includes keeping the weeds under control in the meantime!!!
Our next working bees will be the last ‘organised’ ones this summer. They will be held on Wednesday 2nd and Saturday 5th February, from 10.00 am until 2.00 pm NSW time (i.e. 9.00 am – 1.00 pm Qld time). We will provide tea and coffee and have a barbeque at around 2.00 pm (sausages, vegies, burger). If you have special dietary requirements, please feel welcome to bring your own food along. Lunch will be a time to relax, mix and share what we have achieved together!
You know the old saying, ‘Many hands make light work.’ With your helping hands, you will be helping us create our best opportunity to bounce back as quickly as possible. This will mean we farmers will be able to do what we do best: to produce great quality organic vegetable for you and your family!
We look forward to seeing you. Please remember to bring a bottle of drinking water, a hat, (maybe gloves?) and sunscreen. We have attached directions and a few photos.
Kind regards,
Peter

DIRECTIONS - Summit Organics is located close to the Border Ranges, at 776 Tyalgum Creek Rd,TYALGUM, NSW (please see map below).
From GOLD COAST and MURWILLUMBAH (via Kyogle Rd and Tyalgum Rd)
Take the Kyogle Rd from Murwillumbah. About a half km past the 100 speed sign, turn right into Tyalgum Rd. Wind your way up and out to Tyalgum. Cross the Bartrim Bridge, then at the Tyalgum Rd & Coodgie St intersection turn right into Coodgie St. Go about 100 metres then turn left into Coolman St. Drive past the pub and store on your left and keep going for the full length of Coolman Street (i.e. past the school). Then continue straight ahead (past Carraboi Terrace where Coolman St becomes Tyalgum Creek Rd). Continue out westwards for approximately 8 km. The last kilometre-and-a-bit is gravel and our farm is almost at the end of the road: look for the pile of compost on the right and you know you have arrived!
