Latest Farm News

31/01/2011 – Summit Organics, Tyalgum, Northern NSW.

Greetings!

Many thanks once again if you came out to our working bee last Tuesday. Although it was a hot day we really appreciated your help: so MUCH was achieved! The barbeque was a very pleasant way to round out the day together.

Just to reiterate, the flooding rains left our crops in tatters. We have been growing vegies for thirteen or so years and this is definitely one of our most difficult situations. Unfortunately, we had to put off all our staff two weeks ago – at least temporarily. However the work still has to go on to ensure we have produce available once the really wet weather finishes – hopefully in autumn. Autumn is one of our best times to grow food crops, so it is really important for us to prepare well – which includes keeping the weeds under control in the meantime!!!

Our next working bees will be the last ‘organised’ ones this summer. They will be held on Wednesday 2nd and Saturday 5th February, from 10.00 am until 2.00 pm NSW time (i.e. 9.00 am – 1.00 pm Qld time). We will provide tea and coffee and have a barbeque at around 2.00 pm (sausages, vegies, burger). If you have special dietary requirements, please feel welcome to bring your own food along. Lunch will be a time to relax, mix and share what we have achieved together!

You know the old saying, ‘Many hands make light work.’ With your helping hands, you will be helping us create our best opportunity to bounce back as quickly as possible. This will mean we farmers will be able to do what we do best: to produce great quality organic vegetable for you and your family!

We look forward to seeing you. Please remember to bring a bottle of drinking water, a hat, (maybe gloves?) and sunscreen. We have attached directions and a few photos.

Kind regards,
Peter

DIRECTIONS - Summit Organics is located close to the Border Ranges, at 776 Tyalgum Creek Rd,TYALGUM, NSW (please see map below).

From GOLD COAST and MURWILLUMBAH (via Kyogle Rd and Tyalgum Rd)

Take the Kyogle Rd from Murwillumbah. About a half km past the 100 speed sign, turn right into Tyalgum Rd. Wind your way up and out to Tyalgum. Cross the Bartrim Bridge, then at the Tyalgum Rd & Coodgie St intersection turn right into Coodgie St. Go about 100 metres then turn left into Coolman St. Drive past the pub and store on your left and keep going for the full length of Coolman Street (i.e. past the school). Then continue straight ahead (past Carraboi Terrace where Coolman St becomes Tyalgum Creek Rd). Continue out westwards for approximately 8 km. The last kilometre-and-a-bit is gravel and our farm is almost at the end of the road: look for the pile of compost on the right and you know you have arrived!

END OF YEAR STRUGGLES
As we get closer to Christmas, there seems to be plenty happening. Even out here in the sticks we have a few things to juggle in December, so we want to give you some advanced notice. To start with, my wife Jan, and I will be away for 17 days in the first half of December. Rod and Tania won’t have anyone in the Office during this time so they will certainly appreciate anything you can do to keep your box delivery orders as straightforward as possible!
NO BOX DELIVERIES ON 9th December
In the second week of December, Rod and Tania are attending a workshop to be held in Far North Queensland with American farmer, Joel Salatin. Joel’s main interests are regenerative agriculture, providing clean food and selling it locally (which also means ‘in season’). Joel has the reputation of walking the walk so it should be an inspirational few days. For details, go to www.regenag.com/workshops/polyface/
BUT because Rod and Tan. will be away, we won’t be able to supply your normal vege box onThursday 9th December.

Staff change
Justin Robinson is leaving us for family reasons. He has been working here pretty-much full time for a couple of years but now needs to cut back. In spite of this, Justin hopes to still put in one day here each week. Thanks Juz for all your work, the mechanical repairs, your thirst for knowledge about all things organic and permaculture … and those numerous funny yarns!

All other things being equal, you’ll hear from me next on 23rd December!
Kindest regards, Peter

Wollumbin From Summit Organics – Peter Bracher

04/11/2010 - Summit Organics, Tyalgum, Northern NSW.

So far the weather is remaining kind to us – is it too early to say ‘WHEW’?

We have also commenced trials growing some other products in our seedling nursery (see photo of sunflower sprouts – which we hope you enjoy!). Our trays of wheatgrass have also been selling very well at Tania’s stall at the Gold Coast Organic Market, Miami State High School. (Just by the way, this market is normally held on Sunday mornings but will be held next Monday 8/11 as a ‘one-off’ due to building works at the school over the weekend).

We trust several our customers who have been away had a GREAT time — and hope they don’t find it too hard settling back to the hurly burly and lower altitudes!
Kind regards on behalf of the Summit crew,

Summit Organics - Golden fog Morning mist in the valley at Tyalgum Creek

21/10/2010 – Summit Organics, Tyalgum, Northern NSW.
Dear Friends,
This week we have quite a mix of news. One highlight we are really thrilled about is this:
FARMWALK VIDEO ?
Filmmaker, Kat Gawlik — ably assisted by her partner, Seiorse Carthy — videographed our Farmwalk held on 22 May. Kat has recently completed editing the video and you can now view it on her website - www.forgreenies.com — or by searching for ‘Summit Organics’ on YouTube. The movie runs for around 8 minutes and is beautifully crafted. Well worth a look!
THE SAD NEWS
In case you not have heard, the prolonged wet conditions here means that our crops are dying by the day. We are wanting to keep going with our normal plantings once the sun comes out, though. Hopefully we’ll be able to return soon to the abundance that we would normally offer at this time of the year.
THE GOOD NEWS
So that we can continue to supply your regular box, we will be buying-in additional amounts of produce from ‘certified organic’ wholesalers in Brisbane. This is to supplement what we can supply from here until we are back in production.
* This means the $35 box will include some produce from the wholesalers — for the time being at least.
* One of our best value boxes will be the $40 Mixed Box as it will contain a variety of fruit and veg.
* The $50 Family Box has extra fruit.
BRING ON THE SUNSHINE OVER TYALGUM!
(If you have any ‘contacts’ who can assist with some warm, drier weather, please put in a good word for us!!!)
“According to the National Institute of Health, as people age, their brains respond less strongly to rewards. They say older people become less excited when they win something. Whoever did this study has never seen a bingo game!” — Jay Leno
